Flamenco

Flamenco is a chant, music, and dance, whose origins go way back to the time of the Gypsies. They used the dance to protest against their persecuted lives.

The evolution of Flamenco has followed the pathe described above, first an accapella popular chant, and little by little it began being accompanied by guitars, the luscious flamenco guitars, then las palmas ( those rhythms made by clapping hands), zapateo ( heavy feet stomping), and of course the dance; that combination has been the mother of 50 different styles of Flamenco, this styles vary according to the region of Spain they are practiced at, the context in which the dance is being done, and the grace of the artist.

The classification of the different Flamenco styles is highly disputed, but three major categories can be with drawn nonetheless: those whose propose a more profound and serious approach are called Cante Jondo, those who propose styles with more ease and flair are called Cante Chico, then there is yet another classification that does not correspond to the previous ones, and are considered Cante Intermedio. Many Flamenco artists, even those that are professionals on the dance floor, specialize in only dance style.

All our students are very proud to have learned Flamenco.  It is a very challenging dance to master, with a very peculiar rhythm, and dance steps.  Nevertheless, Flamenco is spirited and full of passion, and purity.  You will be given the chance to learn one of the most traditional and popular Spanish dances, one that will make you feel closer to its culture and centures-old heritage.
