Merengue is a musical genre and a dance that has its roots in the caribbean island of the Dominican Republic. Specifically in the northern region of El Cibao, circa 1850, and today it has expanded to other nations such as Puerto Rico, Venezuela, and the U.S. cities of New York and Miami.
Its origins are very vague: one hypothesis presents the origin of merengue as the result of a dance called la Upa Habanera, that has a step called merengue; or it could be an adaptation of a haitian dance called lemeringue.
The folkloric merengue (merengue típico), uses the accordeon, a güira, a small drum made of wood and untreated leather, perhaps a marimba, and nowadays it even incorporated the guitar. Nowadays it has been influenced by more rhythms such as the salsa and even the rap and hip hop and its cadence has become faster, and more dynamic.
