Sevillanas

Sevillana is a popular dance from Spain, originated in Sevilla, it is a discipline to be danced with a partner, or many other people, in a circle or simply in a group.

This discipline transmits several messages at the same, the closeness, the duel the loss of a cherished love..  It is performed along with a melodic song.

Origines


The origins of the dance remained vague and obscure.  It is the traditional folkloric dance of Sevilla, and it takes some of its cadence from Flamenco, making a derivation of the latter.  Nevertheless, it is very influenced also by the arabic rhythms that are manifested in its movements.  Around the 17th century a version of a dance called the chacona, and the sarabanda appear as well thus evolving into the seguidilla, that later adopted the name of Sevillana in Andalousia.


The Dance


The Sevillanas is danced following a series of 4 couplets, making the couples stop with arms in the air in a very brief pause, that must be marked and it is called el bien parado, or the full good stop.  Sevillanas is composed in four positions, each being more difficult than the previous, and are called first position, second position, third and fourth.  It is said, as a legend that the four positions represent four different typo of encounters. The first encounter, the seduction, The quarrel or break up, and the make up, all in that respective order.
